Iceland’s Golden Waterfall — Gullfoss유럽_Europe 2026. 1. 13. 20:48
If you read the Golden Circle as a single story, the final scene is “the moment the water falls.”
At Geysir, the earth speaks. At Þingvellir, the ground splits. And at Gullfoss, all that energy pours down at once—finishing the narrative in a single, overwhelming surge.
Iceland’s Golden Waterfall — Gullfoss Golden Falls — Gullfoss
Gullfoss carries its meaning in its name: it is, quite literally, the “Golden Falls”. Remarkably, the waterfall drops in two tiers—about 11 metres for the upper fall and roughly 21 metres for the lower—adding up to a total drop of around 32 metres.

Gullfoss — The Stairs Down to the Viewing Platform Because the glacial meltwater of the Hvítá River bends into the canyon and plunges there, the waterfall doesn’t feel as though it is simply pouring downwards; it feels as if it is being drawn inwards, sucked into the very裂 of the gorge. Standing before Gullfoss, I felt less as though I was looking at a waterfall and more as though I’d stumbled upon a vast entrance hidden by aliens. What, I wondered, might be inside that fall?
Gullfoss, the golden waterfall falling in two steps Standing before Gullfoss, the waterfall feels less like a view and more like a phenomenon. If it resembles a vast entrance hidden by aliens, it is the sound and the drifting spray that make that strangeness feel real. The closer I went, the more cold droplets kissed my cheeks, and as the wind shifted, the waterfall’s expression seemed to change with it. At times a white column of mist filled my entire view, and I felt as though I’d stepped onto the edge of an alien world. On a fine day, a rainbow can appear in the spray—and in that moment, the “golden” in Gullfoss feels less like a colour and more like a glimmer from another realm, briefly revealed and gone again.

The viewing area at Gullfoss is broadly divided into two sections (upper/lower), each with a different perspective. In winter, the lower paths may be closed due to ice and safety conditions, so it’s best to follow on-site notices and signs. Gullfoss can be visited year-round, but in summer the volume of water and the green landscape feel larger, while in winter the frozen mist and snowy scenery turn the falls into something like an entirely different sculpture.
Gullfoss (Gullfoss) in Iceland I began to feel that the Golden Circle was not merely a bundle of tourist stops, but a vast narrative in which nature reveals itself. And standing before Gullfoss, that sense of imagination came to its completion. The final scene, as it so often is, is the moment words fall away in the face of nature’s overwhelming power.

Downstream of Gullfoss, the canyon carved by the Hvítá River The face that protected Gullfoss
I thought that, at Gullfoss, I would be looking at nothing but the waterfall. Instead, a small stone pillar by the roadside caught my eye. Seeing a marker carved with the profile of a woman’s face, I found myself wondering why such an unfamiliar memorial stood here.

a commemorative relief in honour of Sigríður Tómasdóttir In the midst of that spectacular cascade, I realised someone was standing with the landscape too—someone who had tried to protect it. The stone was a memorial relief to Sigríður Tómasdóttir, widely remembered for the part she played in safeguarding Gullfoss.
Gullfoss overwhelms you with the force of nature, but it is the steadfast heart of one person—refusing to let that nature be taken away—that makes this waterfall feel even deeper.
Memory walks through landscapes, and becomes a story.
