  • Sky Lagoon vs Blue Lagoon — Which One Is Better?
    유럽_Europe 2025. 12. 28. 06:19

I think that in an Iceland trip, visiting a lagoon is not optional but essential.
Among all the geothermal lagoons, the two most frequently compared are Sky Lagoon and Blue Lagoon.

Both places give you the feeling of soaking in heaven, yet their atmosphere and charm are completely different.
I personally visited Sky Lagoon, but during the trip I met quite a few travelers who had experienced both.

Out of curiosity, I asked them,
“If you’ve been to both, which one was better?”

They all paused for a moment, as if thinking carefully, and then gave the same answer.
It’s hard to say which one is better.
Their charms are simply too different—choosing one means inevitably missing the beauty of the other.

Sky Lagoon — Where the Sky Meets the Sea

Sky Lagoon offers a breathtaking view where the sea and sky seem to merge into one, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into paradise.
When the evening sky fills with sunset colors, I found myself wondering whether heaven, if it exists, might look something like this.

Although Sky Lagoon has a relatively short history, it is perfect for travelers who value stillness, scenery, and the experience of simply staying in the moment.
Rather than just “going to a hot spring,” it allows you to turn the act of soaking into a memorable scene in your journey—one of reflection, calm, and presence.

    • Opened: 2021
    • Location: Near downtown Reykjavík
    • Water color: Deep grayish-blue, close to the natural color of the sea

    Highlights

    • A dramatic infinity edge where sea and sky flow seamlessly together
    • A modern interpretation of Icelandic tradition through the 7-step ritual experience
    • A deeply immersive lagoon with minimal artificial elements

👉 Less about healing the body, more about letting the mind truly rest.

Blue Lagoon — The Legend of Milky-Blue Waters

While I experienced Sky Lagoon, I would recommend Blue Lagoon to first-time visitors to Iceland.
The milky, opaque water itself offers a completely unique and unforgettable experience.

    • Formed: 1976
    • Location: Near Keflavík International Airport
    • Water color: Milky white with a soft blue tone, caused by silica minerals

    Highlights

    • World-famous silica-rich mineral water
    • Known for soothing and moisturizing the skin (also studied in relation to eczema and psoriasis)
    • Convenient to visit right after arrival or just before departure

👉 Why is it called the Blue Lagoon?
Although the water isn’t purely blue, the subtle blue hue shimmering through the milky surface is what inspired the name.

Final Thoughts — Which One Should You Choose?

    • If you’re searching for a “heaven for the soul” → Sky Lagoon
    • If you want to experience Iceland’s most iconic symbol → Blue Lagoon

    If possible, visit both.
One is an experience of dissolving into the landscape,
the other is a memory shaped by the milky-blue water itself.

Iceland’s lagoons warm more than just the body—
they gently warm your senses and your memories first.
