  • Steam Train to the Welsh Sky: A Journey on the Snowdon Mountain Railway
    대영제국_United Kingdom(UK) 2026. 8. 4. 23:22

Wales is one of the four nations that make up the United Kingdom. Before this trip, I was chatting with my friend Jane when she mentioned the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Had she not told me about it, I would probably have missed one of the most unforgettable experiences of my journey. Even now, I can still vividly remember that day.

As the steam train climbed slowly through the mountains wrapped in low clouds, it felt as though we were riding towards the sky itself. Gazing out of the window at the ever-changing landscape, I felt as if I too were drifting somewhere between the mountains and the heavens.

The locomotive laboured up the steep mountain track, its whistle echoing across the slopes as white steam billowed into the air. The steam merged seamlessly with the clouds embracing the mountainside until it became impossible to tell where one ended and the other began. Watching the scene unfold, I found myself wondering whether the road to heaven might look something like this.

The Mountain Railway That Defines Wales

North Wales is home to several historic steam railways, but none left a stronger impression on me than the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Opened in 1896, this remarkable mountain railway has carried visitors to the summit of Snowdon (Welsh: Yr Wyddfa), the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 metres above sea level. Today, it remains one of Wales' most iconic attractions.

There are several ways to reach the summit, including hiking and shuttle buses, but I chose the oldest and most romantic one. Travelling slowly towards the summit aboard a steam locomotive that has followed the same railway for more than a century became one of the most memorable moments of my journey through Wales.

Towards the Sky by Steam Train

As the train slowly departed Llanberis Station, green meadows and shimmering lakes unfolded before us. White steam drifted upwards from the locomotive while its powerful whistle echoed through the quiet mountains. It felt as though I had stepped back into another era.

As we climbed higher, the scenery gradually transformed. Soft green hills gave way to rugged rock faces, while clouds slowly descended over the mountain. The train continued through drifting mist towards the summit, and I found myself completely absorbed by the ever-changing landscape.

Along the mountain trail we repeatedly passed hikers making their way to the summit on foot. They waved enthusiastically towards the train, and we returned the greeting through the carriage windows. It lasted only a few moments, yet somehow felt like a shared encouragement between travellers following different paths.

Countless sheep grazed peacefully across the hillsides. Watching them scattered over the rolling landscape, I began to feel as though the entire mountain had become one vast pasture. It was the kind of idyllic countryside that seemed uniquely Welsh.

The Moment the Steam Train Began Its Climb

As the locomotive slowly pulled away, its long whistle rang out while white steam billowed into the air.

For a brief moment, I felt as though I had stepped into a scene from an old film. Images from Anna Karenina, with its iconic steam trains, naturally came to mind.

The rhythmic sound of the wheels striking the rails echoed beneath us as Llanberis gradually disappeared into the distance.

The train was never fast, and that was precisely its charm. Lakes, stone walls, green meadows and grazing sheep—landscapes that would have flashed by from a car—drifted past at a gentle pace. Watching them unfold, I felt as though I had become the main character in a classic film.

Higher and Higher Towards the Sky

As the train climbed, the view widened with every passing minute. The blue lakes and green fields below gradually shrank, while the mountain ranges of Wales stretched endlessly into the distance. Landscapes that had seemed close only moments before now resembled a vast map beneath my feet.

The famously unpredictable Welsh weather added another layer of beauty. Sunlight briefly illuminated the slopes before clouds and mist swept across the mountainside, transforming the scenery completely. Although we remained on the same railway, the landscape outside never looked the same twice.

Wales from the Summit of Snowdon

At last we arrived at the summit, 1,085 metres above sea level. On a clear day, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the mountains and lakes of Snowdonia National Park.

The day I visited, however, the mountain was completely wrapped in cloud, making it feel as though I had stepped above the world itself. At the summit station there was a small café serving hot drinks, and a cup of rich hot chocolate became the perfect remedy for the cold mountain air.

Five Young Hikers at the Summit

There I met five teenage boys from Afghanistan. They had climbed all the way to the summit on foot and planned to return by train after getting soaked in the rain.

Unfortunately, the train I was boarding was the last service of the day, and it was already fully booked. Travelling from overseas, they seemed unaware that tickets needed to be reserved well in advance.

I still remember how disappointed and anxious they looked.

How did they eventually get back down the mountain? Did they have to walk the entire trail again as darkness approached?

After spending some time at the summit, I boarded the same train for the journey back down. The scenery looked entirely different on the descent. As rain began falling through the thick clouds, I found myself thinking about those boys for the rest of the journey.

The Final Steps to Snowdon's Highest Point

The Golden Disc Hidden in the Clouds

When I arrived at the summit station, I noticed people climbing towards the rocky summit. Wanting to stand on the highest point of my Snowdon journey, I carefully made my way up the slippery rock steps.

The rain had made the rocks extremely slippery. More than once I considered turning back, but I knew I would regret leaving without standing on Snowdon's highest point.

At the top, I was greeted by a large golden circular disc. Surrounded by endless grey cloud, the golden marker looked almost mystical.

It was a toposcope—a panoramic orientation table showing the names and directions of the mountains, lakes and towns visible from the summit.

Had the weather been clear, I could have followed each engraved name to the magnificent Welsh landscape beyond.

Instead, I found nothing but endless cloud.

Yet perhaps because nothing could be seen, my imagination travelled even farther. The mountains and lakes hidden beyond the mist have remained in my memory far longer than any clear view could have.

More Than Transport—A Journey by Steam Train

Many visitors see reaching the summit as the goal of their trip. For me, however, the true highlight was not the destination but the steam train itself.

This was far more than transportation. It was a journey through Welsh nature at an unhurried pace, while travelling aboard a railway that has been part of the country's history for more than a century.

The landscapes outside the window, the deep rhythm of the engine, and the powerful whistle of the locomotive combined to create an experience I will never forget.
